Abstract: The challenges of micro pollutants resulting from human activities in urban water are discussed. The recent advances in preoxidation with permanganate, ferrate, ozone, persulphate are summarized for the degradation of emerging organic pollutants. The manganese oxides and iron oxides formed in situ are investigated for enhanced degradation of organic pollutants and removal of heavy metals. The effectiveness of ozone, permanganate and ferrate oxidation is compared with respect to the degradation of organic pollutants and control of disinfection byproducts in water.
The presentation will review the development of advanced oxidation processes such as catalytic ozonation for enhanced degradation of refractory pollutants (pesticides, EDCs and pharmaceuticals) in aqueous solution in the presence of some nanoparticles. The combined processes of catalytic ozonation and biological activated carbon filtration for the treatment of polluted surface water was introduced. Full scale applications of above processes in water and wastewater reclamation are introduced.
