We will be explore the following topics:

  • Developing public health recommendations in the absence of definitive science
  • Exploring the principles used to guide decision making in public health
  • Talking through examples from public health practice in North Carolina, for example
  • Recommendation on Isolation and Quarantine in NC and the USA during Ebola outbreak of 2014-2015
  • Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis case in a whitewater rafting center
  • Zika virus transmission and preventing birth defects

Dr. Megan Davies was the State Epidemiologist and Chief of the Epidemiology Section of the North Carolina Division of Public Health from August 2009 until August 2016. Megan received her BA degree from Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina, and her MD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She completed residency training in Family Medicine at East Carolina University and then practiced family medicine in western North Carolina for four years. Her epidemiology training was in CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS 1998), following which she served as a staff epidemiologist with the Center for Disease Control in the Center for Injury Prevention and Control. In 2002, Megan moved to the North Carolina Division of Public Health as a Career Epidemiology Field Officer working on communicable disease and public health preparedness. In 2009, she took the position of State Epidemiologist for North Carolina.
