CEINT student wins poster award at SNO meeting
December 16, 2014
CEINT affiliate and Virginia Tech PhD student Matt Chan presented a poster entitled “2D and 3D visualization of nanomaterials in complex media using label-free confocal Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy”, co-authored by Weinan Leng and Peter J. Vikesland. Matt’s poster covered his most recent work on utilizing confocal Raman and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to visualize nanomaterials (such as gold and silver nanoparticles, and carbon nanotubes) in complex media. Specifically, he investigated materials such as a clay filter, a quartz filter, and a packed bed of glass beads. Clay water filters were provided by collaborators at the University of Rhode Island and quartz filters were provided by a collaborator at University of Notre Dame. This is a novel application for label-less detection of nanomaterials in environmental matrices.
The Sustainable Nanotechnoogy Organization held its third conference in Boston, MA on November 2 - 4, 2014. A number of CEINT students and faculty from Virginia Tech were present and CEINT Director, Mark Weisner presented a plenary session on CEINT research findings.
