George Aiken

George Aiken is a senior researcher with the National Research Program of the U. S. Geological Survey. He received a M.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. in applied chemistry from the Colorado School of Mines. Since joining the U.S. Geological Survey in 1976, Aiken has devoted his career to studying the chemistry of dissolved organic matter in natural waters. Presently, his research group is focused on the roles played by dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the biogeochemistry of mercury and other metals, effects of hydrology and climate change on DOM in high- latitude and temperate systems, and development of improved methods for studying DOM composition and reactivity. He also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Colorado and is a member of the Committee for Standard Methods (American Water Works Association).
